Blog Post #1 - Welcome to My Professional Blog

Hello! I am Jessica Schuler and I am studying at UWM to become a secondary English teacher. I have always wanted to be an English teacher but I didn't have the motivation to go to college right after high school, so I joined the Air Force and served for 8 years. I've spent the last few years diligently working towards my degree and have finally reached the last year of college...for now! I would like to teach middle school, grades 6-8, but I'm not opposed to teaching high school. After I earn my bachelor's degree, I would like to take a year off and focus on teaching before I go and get my master's degree. I'd like to continue my teaching studies and I dream of becoming a professor teaching education classes to aspiring teachers.

Here's a picture of me and my family when we went hiking at Devil's Lake:

One website that I love to use is Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/). I'd love to incorporate this website into my curriculum. I think it would be fun to create a class group on the website where my students and I can share reviews about the books we are reading. I also like that there are recommendations for books that you might like based on what you've already read. The website has so much to offer for all readers and I think it would be a great tool to use in the classroom!

  1. Hi Jessica,

I like that you included good reads. I have always found that site helpful. I love the idea you have about really using it in the classroom for more than just a reference resource. Having s collaboration with students in the class as well as what you're reading is creative and fun.

  2. Hello Jessica,

I really liked your blog post, great picture of the family, love devils lake. I didn't go right into college either. It took me awhile to figure out what I wanted to do after high school. I think alot of people just rush into college and don't really know what they want to do, so im glad you talked about that in the blog. Teaching middle school sounds fun, I myself hope to teach high school. That good reads website looks like it would be a great tool to use in the classroom.

  3. Hi Jessica, It's so cool that you have a plan for the things that you want to accomplish for your career. I often struggle having with choosing specific things that I want to do with my life. The fact that you did not go right into college after high school was smart. I was 17 when i started college and had literally no clue what i wanted to do. I just knew I was expected to go to college, so I went. This led me to waste so much time (and money). I think if I would have waited a few years, I would have known what I wanted.

I think you will really enjoy teaching middle-school. They are such a fun age group to have in the classroom. Congrats on being in your last year! You got this!
