Blog Post #3 Visualizing Understanding

For my visualization, I created an infographic about the Gender Literary Theory. My idea behind this project was to make a poster that would be displayed in the classroom as a sort of "cheat sheet" for students to use while we do a unit exploring Gender Theory. The infographic has the very basics of understanding what Gender Theory is. I began with a textbook definition and a powerful quote from Sue Monk Kidd that states: "The problem seems to me is not that there are differences but rather how we value these differences." I would want my students to really consider this quote deeply as Gender Theory has everything to do with differences, specifically between men and women. The next section of the poster is the difference between sex and gender. It's important for students to understand that sex is a biological trait and gender focuses on the differences between men and women. I added some of the basic symbols of men and women. On the sex side, the colors are b...

Blog Post #2 Where I am and Where I want to go

I think one of the most important things that I've learned about literacy is that it is more than just reading a paper text, writing out your understanding of said text via an essay, and then waiting for a grade to see if you really understand the text. Along my journey of studying to be an ELA teacher I've discovered that students' understanding of topics can be assessed using different forms of multimodal composition. Meaning, rather than a typical essay or question and answer worksheet, students can create different types of projects that show what they've learned. Kids today are all about technology. As a teacher, I think it's important to tap into this technology and use it in the classroom. Why should students just have to write an essay? Why can't they show me what they've learned using other forms of composition like infographics, timelines, posters, public service announcements, the list can go on. Using these multimodal projects taps into your stu...

Hello! I am Jessica Schuler and I am studying at UWM to become a secondary English teacher. I have always wanted to be an English teacher but I didn't have the motivation to go to college right after high school, so I joined the Air Force and served for 8 years. I've spent the last few years diligently working towards my degree and have finally reached the last year of college...for now! I would like to teach middle school, grades 6-8, but I'm not opposed to teaching high school. After I earn my bachelor's degree, I would like to take a year off and focus on teaching before I go and get my master's degree. I'd like to continue my teaching studies and I dream of becoming a professor teaching education classes to aspiring teachers.  Here's a picture of me and my family when we went hiking at Devil's Lake: One website that I love to use is Goodreads ( https://www.goodreads.com/ ). I'd love to incorporate this website into my curriculum. I think it would...
